Dr. Susan Buchanan
Ph.D., C.Psych.

Psychologist

Dr. Buchanan completed her clinical training at the University of Manitoba (Ph.D. clinical program) and her residency in the Clinical Health Psychology program, also at the University of Manitoba. She has over 20 years of experience working with clients across all age ranges, navigating diverse emotional, psychological, cultural, and environmental barriers. Her clinical work spans both assessment and therapy, including co-developing an Adult ADHD clinic at a local hospital and 13 years in primary-care clinics. She remains an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Clinical Training Program at Queen’s University, co-teaching advanced therapy courses and supervising clinical psychology graduate students.

Dr. Buchanan’s therapy orientation is eclectic, meaning she meets each client where they are. In this client-centered approach, she draws on extensive training in cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and emotionally-focused therapy, working to provide a respectful, collaborative, and nurturing atmosphere. Her approach is strengths-based, culturally informed, and inclusive of all aspects of a client’s intersectionality, creating a safe space for clients to bring their full, authentic selves into therapy.

Dr. Buchanan is a member of the Red River Métis from Manitoba, born and raised in Winnipeg on Treaty 1 territory and the Homeland of the Red River Métis. For over 20 years, she has lived in Eastern Ontario, outside of Kingston. She has particular experience supporting First Nations and Métis peoples, first responders, military members, veterans and their families, and clients with ADHD, ASD, and AuDHD. Her practice addresses anxiety, OCD, depression, behavioural problems, grief and bereavement, life transitions and conflict, communication difficulties, anger management, addictions, burnout, crisis management, health changes and chronic illness, pain management, and mild cognitive impairment.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Buchanan enjoys spending time outdoors year-round — swimming, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, biking, and gardening — and training her Portuguese Water Dogs.
