Returning to school can be both exciting and challenging for neurodiverse students. Here are five tips to ease the transition:
- Establish a Routine: Start shifting back to school routines a few weeks before classes begin. Set consistent wake-up, meal, and study times, and use visual schedules if helpful.
- Get Organized: Prepare school supplies ahead of time. Create a checklist and involve your child in gathering and organizing materials to build a sense of readiness.
- Connect with Support Staff: Reach out to the school’s learning support team before or during the first week. Discuss any accommodations or support your child may need to ensure they’re in place from the start.
- Discuss Goals and Concerns: Have open talks about goals and any worries about the school year. This helps in setting realistic goals and planning coping strategies.
- Encourage Self-Care: Promote routines that support emotional well-being, such as mindfulness. Encourage hobbies and social connections.
These steps can help neurodiverse students approach the new school year with greater confidence and ease.
