Did you know that many people living with neurodivergent conditions can benefit from nutrition advice. A diet full of variety has been linked to improved mental health. Our Registered Dietitian (RD), Melinda Lamarche MScCH, RD with our Diverse Minds Dietitian Service is here to help families, children and adults, optimize their nutrition.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that some dietary changes have shown to be beneficial in reducing impulsivity, hyperactivity and concentration in some study participants, however more research is needed. Optimizing overall nutrition has many benefits and you may find that making even small changes may help to minimize or address some of your own symptoms and counteract the impact of medication side effects. Tailored nutrition advice can help you with making small changes with potentially big impact.
Effective medications and treatments for some mental health conditions often come with undesirable side effects that can impact many aspects of life. Often those side effects impact nutritional status by causing tummy discomfort and / or suppressing appetite. Oftentimes, especially with children, a lack of appetite may contribute to picky eating, poor nutritional intake and in some cases, growth and development issues. In addition, many neurodivergent clients have sensory issues which can greatly impact food intake and contribute to selective (“picky”) eating. A Registered Dietitian (RD) can help parents of neurodivergent children, and adults navigate these challenges to ensure adequate nutrition to meet individual requirements. Goals will be individualized, created together with the RD and client, to address the nutrition related challenges you are facing. Often, goals centre around meal planning together, setting a routine and structure around meals and snacks, food choices, food play and exposures.
Not only is food the fuel each body needs to function at its best, it is also something that brings families and friends together. Food brings a lot of enjoyment to life, but can sometimes be complicated. Working towards making healthful food choices and developing a positive relationship with food is within your reach.
