One of the biggest EF challenges that neurodiverse students face is finding the right system to plan and prioritize their time. At the Possibilities Clinic, we offer several services that can support these challenges such as ADHD and Executive Functioning Coaching, College and University Coaching, and Assistive Technology Coaching.
Here are eight strategies that could help support the management and optimization of a digital daily planner:
- Simple and Intuitive Interface: Choose a digital planner with a user-friendly interface, free of clutter, and easy to navigate. Avoid overly complex tools that might overwhelm the student.
- Visual Organization: Use colour coding and icons to visually categorize different tasks, subjects, or types of activities. This makes it easier for students to quickly identify and differentiate between items.
- Consistent Daily Routine: Encourage students to create a consistent daily routine and input it into their digital planner. This includes setting regular times for waking up, classes, study sessions, breaks, and bedtime.
- Set Reminders and Alerts: Reminders and alerts are essential for students with ADHD. Utilize the planner’s notification features to remind them of upcoming tasks, assignments, or events.
- Use Time Blocking: Teach students to block out specific time periods for different activities on their digital planner. This technique helps them allocate time efficiently and reduces the chance of becoming overly absorbed in a single task.
- Sync Across Devices: Ensure that the digital planner can be synced across various devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers. This way, students can access their schedules from anywhere and stay organized on the go.
- Encourage Regular Updates: Set aside time each day for students to review and update their digital planners. This practice reinforces their sense of responsibility and keeps the planner accurate and up-to-date.
- Monitor Progress: Work with students to review their planner regularly and discuss their progress. Identify areas of improvement and celebrate successes, providing positive reinforcement for using the planner effectively.
