Managing the Mess: Top Tips for Helping Your Child Maintain a Tidy Bedroom

Helping a child with ADHD keep their room organized and tidy can be challenging, but it’s certainly possible with the right strategies and support. This is something that our ADHD coaches at the Possibilities clinic support children with on a regular basis.

Here are the top 5 tips to get you started:

Simplify and Declutter: Start by reducing the number of items in the room. Encourage your child to go through their belongings and keep only what they need and use. This will make it easier to maintain order.

Create a Clear Organization System: Use labels, bins, and storage containers to help your child easily categorize and find their belongings. Visual cues and labels can be especially helpful for children with ADHD.

Routine and Consistency: Establish a daily or weekly cleaning routine. Set specific times for tidying up, and make it a part of their daily schedule. Consistency can help build habits over time.

Break Tasks into Smaller Steps: For children with ADHD, tasks can be overwhelming. Break down the organization process into smaller, manageable steps. For example, rather than saying, “Clean your room,” you can say, “Let’s start by putting away your clothes.”

Positive Reinforcement and Rewards: Use a reward system to motivate your child. Offer positive reinforcement when they complete their organizational tasks. Rewards can be as simple as extra playtime, a favourite snack, or a special outing

Be sure to involve them in the process and make it a collaborative effort, which can increase their sense of responsibility and ownership over their space.
