When Sleep Continues to Be the Missing Piece of the Puzzle

You’ve worked on the routines. You’ve tried the sleep tips, the earlier bedtime, the apps, the supplements—and yet sleep is still hard. For many neurodivergent adults, sleep can be the missing piece of the puzzle. You may understand your ADHD or Autism, have strategies that help you manage your day, and still find yourself lying awake at night with a brain that refuses to slow down. Or perhaps you fall asleep easily but wake feeling unrefreshed, struggle with a delayed sleep schedule, or experience a “second wind” just when you are supposed to be winding down.

When sleep isn’t working, everything else can feel harder. Focus and executive functioning may require more effort, emotional regulation can become more challenging, and energy and motivation can take a hit. This can create a frustrating cycle: ADHD-related challenges can make it harder to establish consistent sleep routines, while poor sleep can amplify difficulties with attention, organization, mood and energy.

Sleep challenges aren’t always solved by simply practicing better “sleep hygiene.” There can be many pieces to the puzzle, including neurodivergent ways of processing, sensory needs, stress, routines, medication timing, circadian rhythm differences, physical health and the thoughts and behaviours that can maintain insomnia. It is also important not to assume that every sleep difficulty is simply part of ADHD or Autism. Conditions such as insomnia, sleep apnea and restless legs can occur alongside neurodivergence and may require their own assessment and treatment.

A neuroaffirmative approach to sleep means looking at the whole person rather than simply trying to make someone fit a standard sleep routine. It means asking: What is getting in the way of sleep for this individual, and what might actually help? Understanding your sleep patterns alongside your neurodivergence, health, routines and daily life can help identify the factors that are keeping you from getting the restorative sleep you need.
